Las Tejedoras Fiber Arts Guild Demonstrations


Throughout both days of the festival members of Las Tejedoras will also be demonstrating a variety of fiber crafts and invite visitors to try many of them.
SATURDAY
9:00 – 10:00 - Ellen Higgins: the use of different plying techniques to make novelty and art yarns.
10:30 – 11:30 - Patty Coughlin: the use of wool yarns in various embroidery and needlepoint techniques.
Noon – 1:00 - Christy Reveles: weaving fabric on a floor loom with many colorful examples from her handweaving journey. -
1:30 – 2:30 - Annie MacHale: band weaving on an inkle loom and the use of color to create patterns.
3:00 – 4:00 - Dana Kull: weaving on small pin looms, joining methods, and uses of the resulting fabrics.

SUNDAY
9:00 – 10:00 - Sue Mills: Kumihimo, the art of Japanese braiding, with samples of different patterns and uses.
10:30 – 11:30 - Joy Getha: spinning wool yarn using a simple, portable tool: a drop spindle. She will have several types of drop spindles to demonstrate.
Noon – 1:00 - Julie Filatoff: weaving on a rigid heddle loom, which is affordable, simple enough for beginners, but can be complex enough to create advanced patterns.
1:30 – 2:30 - Rae Dollard: freeform weaving on a Saori loom.


All Day Saturday - The Las Aranas guild will be demonstrating Restoration of Woven Navajo and Oriental type Rugs

Saturday 11:00-4:00 in the exhibit hall main area - An afternoon of Art Making


The activities will include:
  • Making yarn cordage bracelets
  • Painting a scenic postcard with watercolors
  • Wrapping a stick with yarn to tell a story (An easy wool craft for the littlest fiber artist)
  • Opportunity to draw and color in response to the festival (all ages)

Saturday

12:00 - Glenna Dean , Art Through the Loom Guild member Spinning Anything with Nothing
Spinning yarn is nothing more than creating and deliberately distributing twist in your fiber. Paying close attention while practicing this simple principle will make your fiber respect YOU!
1:00 - Rhonda Amen , the Fleece Factory Buying and Preparing a Raw Fleece
This demo will help you with all the questions about buying and preparing a raw fleece.
2:00 - Kathy Schneider Blending Fiber and Colors
Hackles and combs will be used to blend colors and different types of fibers to produce roving and or top.
3:00 - Judy Chapman , Art Through the Loom Guild member Needle Felting with a touch of Wet Felting
Attendees will learn how to make wool locks to needle felt onto a needle felted sheep.
4:00 - Rene Zender , Casa Alapaca and Fiberworks Carding and Spinning Alpaca Fiber
How to card and spin alpaca fiber with no washing of the fiber.

Sunday

11:00 - Carol Garnand , Carol SILKS Botanical Printing
Learn to print using leaves, flowers, seed pods, and other natural materials to create patterns on fabric such as silk, wool or cotton. This eco-printing evokes the Colorado outdoors.
12:00 - Alicia Marshall , Moondance Alpacas Felting a Hat with a Brim
She will start with carded alpaca fiber and end up with a felted 3D hat.
1:00 - Joy Getha Yarn Dyeing Demonstration
Join fiber artist and instructor Joy Getha as she demonstrates how she dyes a skein of sock yarn.
2:00 - June Covington , Textiles Coordinator at Oil & Cotton Art and Supply in Dallas, TX Spindle Spinning With (and without) a Distaff
Sometimes, the old ways are the most efficient. Learn how to prepare long-lock wool with combs, mount it on a distaff then spin that roving into yarn on a supported spindle. Whorls and shafts of various styles will be discussed.
3:00 - Joy Getha Spinning on a Spindle and Wheel
Join fiber artist and instructor Joy Getha as she demonstrates how to spin on both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel.
